Mental Health Peer Specialists and People Who Are Justice Involved
People in the criminal justice system experience higher rates of substance use disorders, mental health challenges, and chronic health conditions than the general population. Most people who are currently incarcerated will be released back to their communities. Mental health peer specialists will likely work with those who are justice involved who may have different needs and challenges. This webinar will look at one successful program and provide details on activities and practices that can be reproduced by mental health peer specialists across the US for successful engagement of people who are justice involved. Learning Objectives: - Learn more about how using peer-facilitated groups and peer support can reduce the rate of recidivism for service recipients reentering the community. - Gain insight into strategic ways for mental health peer specialists to communicate and connect with those reentering the community after incarceration. - Identify preconceived ideas and judgements of people who are justice involved that can affect how mental health peer specialists provide peer support.
